Recently, I was watching "Jesus of Nazareth" during this Christmas season which always gets me focused on the reason for the season and gives me a spiritual connection. I was struck by a line in response to Judas saying "He has one of the most open minds of the San Hedron". Jesus stated simply, "Open your heart not your mind". For some reason, this made me think very deep thoughts. In regards, to what this means in our current culture and the openness of our hearts or how closed off people can be based on their experiences.
Today, we seem to think of these two (open heart/open mind) as interchangeable. But the mind can be clincial and often lead us to the wrong choices. When I have listened only to my mind and did not listen to my emotions the choice no matter how logical has been wrong. Yet, my emotional choices have frequently been correct which is counter to logic. The question is "Do you have the strength to keep a tender, compassionate heart despite the influences and discouragements of this world?" There are so many people walking around with cold dispositions and sour countennances that may have resulted from a lack of caring by others or they have dealt with so much pain they have withdrawn. This should be a rallying point to help others with kindness but this is often difficult if you have not experienced kindness in your life or have been dealt with harshly by others. The other choice is, "Has the world scarred your heart so much it is no longer capable of feeling pain or compassion?" In other words,"Do you still have the strength to dare to care?" The choice to be loving, kind, joyful, hopeful instead of barricaded behind a wall of emotional safety which appears cold hearted and results in aloneness. How many people care but are to battle weary of the world and now lack the bravery to admit they care? Remember another during the holiday and everyday this year and realize they may not be what they appear to be on the outside. The grass or life of another may seem greener but you never know what that person may be dealing with. God bless and remember the importance of kindness. Maybe, gradually, it will open some hearts because of renewed hope and gentleness of spirit. Dare to care or love your neighbor as yourself. God bless.
that line was made up by the producers or whoever wrote the script, but it isnt Biblical
ReplyDeleteThe character of Zerah is a fictional character. Therefore, Jesus never really mentions about "opening your heart, not your mind." But, if the question was posed to Jesus about whether to open your mind or not, Jesus would've definitely said that we must open our hearts and not our minds.
ReplyDeleteJesus was referring to the truth. People like Judas, scribes and Pharisees were blind and cannot see the truth. Likewise their hearts were closed to the Divine will and spiritual teachings of God. When these two are closed, the mind thinks logically according to what fills inside our hearts; and these are the world's standards and our love for this world which are blinding to the eyes to see the reality to recognize Jesus the Messiah yet He was already there before their eyes. In this case mind is just opened to what we just like to understand. Therefore as Jesus said "not your mind", meaning it is unnecessary to have mind opened if this is the mentality while the eyes cannot see and the heart desires not to honestly find the truth but only interested in his-self instead; for the one whose heart and eyes are opened, the mind thinks accordingly with them.
